Construction Spending for April 2015

c

Construction Spending hit its highest level in nearly 6 ½ years for April. The jump increased spending was 2.2 percent to an annual rate of $1.0 trillion and the highest since November 2008 as reported by the Commerce Department last week. The percent increase was the largest since May 2012 and welcomed news for the construction industry, housing market and the overall economy.

March outlays were also revised up to show a 0.5 percent increase instead of the previously reported -0.6 percent fall. Most economists expected construction spending to rising 0.7 percent in April.

The report adds to business spending plans, employment and housing data in suggesting some momentum in the economy early in the second quarter even as consumer spending and industrial production have been soft. The economy contracted at a 0.7 percent annual rate in the first quarter.

In April, construction spending was buoyed by a 1.8 percent increase in private construction spending to the highest level since October 2008 and April’s residential construction put in place edged up 0.6% from March, but has slipped 1.8 percent year over year, while private non-residential construction projects jumped 3.1 percent to a six-year high.

Public construction outlays were up 3.3 percent by state and local governments. Spending on state and local government construction projects rose 3.9 percent to the highest level since October last year and the largest portion by the public sector, which was offset a 3.6 percent decline in the federal government spending.
