Waialua, Hawaii

WaialuaWaialua is a very small coastal town on the ocean located in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 3,860 people and two constituent neighborhoods, Waialua is the 33rd largest community in Hawaii.

Housing costs in Waialua are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don’t compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Hawaii.

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Waialua is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Waialua is a town of professionals, sales and office workers and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in Waialua who work in management occupations 13.16 percent, sales jobs at 11.28 percent and teaching 9.09 percent.

There are many members of the armed forces living in Waialua. You will notice when you visit or live here that some of the people you meet or see around town are employed by the armed services – even if they are not always in uniform.

In terms of college education, Waialua is somewhat better educated than the 21.84 percent who have a 4-year degree or higher in the typical US community: 26.06 percent of adults 25 and older in the town have at least a bachelor’s degree.

The per capita income in Waialua in 2010 was $26,963, which is upper middle income relative to Hawaii and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $107,852 for a family of four. However, Waialua contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Waialua is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Waialua home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Waialua residents report their race to be Asian, followed by White. Important ancestries of people in Waialua include Italian, German, Portuguese, Irish and English.

In addition, Waialua has a lot of people living here who were born outside of the US at 18.74 percent.

The languages spoken by people in Waialua are also diverse. These are tabulated as the languages people preferentially speak when they are at home with their families. The most common language spoken in Waialua is English. Other important languages spoken here include Pacific Island languages, Tagalog, Portuguese and Japanese.
