BUILDING THE DREAM OF HOME OWNERSHIP

Picture2

Kailua is a medium-sized coastal town located in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 38,635 people and 14 constituent neighborhoods, Kailua is the fourth largest community in Hawaii.

Kailua home prices are not only among the most expensive in Hawaii, but Kailua real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Kailua is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 85.49 percent of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Kailua is a town of professionals, sales and office workers and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Kailua who work in office and administrative support at 13.22 percent, management occupations at 12.86 percent and sales jobs at 11.19 percent.

Kailua is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean and place that visitors and locals go for waterfront activities or taking in the scenery.

Like elsewhere in America, most people in Kailua use a private automobile to get to work. But notably, a substantial number of Kailua‘s citizens do make use of public transit in their daily commute, primarily riding the bus. This helps more people get to work with less air pollution and require fewer highways to get them there.

The citizens of Kailua are among the most well-educated in the nation: 44.48 percent of adults in Kailua have a bachelor’s or advanced degree, whereas the average US city has 21.84 percent holding at least a bachelor’s degree.

The per capita income in Kailua in 2010 was $40,733, which is well-to-do relative to Hawaii and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $162,932 for a family of four. However, Kailua contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Kailua is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Kailua home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Kailua residents reports their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Kailua include German, English, Irish and Portuguese.

The most common language spoken in Kailua is English. Other important languages spoken here include Pacific Island languages and Japanese.

Waimanalo is also a somewhat small coastal town located just south of Kailua in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 5,451 people and three constituent neighborhoods, Waimanalo is the 28th largest community in Hawaii.

Housing costs in Waimanalo are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don’t compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in Hawaii.

Waimanalo is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Waimanalo is a town of service providers, sales and office workers and professionals. There are especially a lot of people living in Waimanalo who work in office and administrative support at 16.32 percent, maintenance occupations at 11.04 percent and sales jobs at 10.14 percent.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce at 7.97 percent of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

One of the nice things about Waimanalo is that it is also nautical and both visitors and locals will often enjoy the scenery and waterfront activities.

In Waimanalo, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 32.11 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average. One bright side is that local public transit is widely used, so it may be an option to avoid the headache of driving in the heavy traffic by leaving the car at home and taking transit.

Despite being a small town, Waimanalo has a lot of people using the bus to get to and from work every day. Most of these people on the bus are using it to get to good jobs in other cities.

The percentage of people in Waimanalo with college degrees is quite a bit lower than the national average for cities and towns of 21.84 percent with just 10.46 percent of people over 25 have a bachelor’s or advanced degree.

The per capita income in Waimanalo in 2010 was $19,983, which is modest relative to Hawaii, and the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $79,932 for a family of four. However, Waimanalo contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Waimanalo is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Waimanalo home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Waimanalo residents report their race to be Native Hawaiian, followed by Asian. The main ancestry of people in Waimanalo is Portuguese.

The most common language spoken in Waimanalo is English. Some people also speak Pacific Island languages.
